Microstructure and mechanical properties of sputter-deposited Ti-Ni alloy thin films

Article Abstract:

The effects of shape memory as well as superelasticity and two-way shape memory of Ni-rich Ti-Ni sputter-deposited thin films were assessed. The findings indicated that they are nearly similar to those of bulk specimens. However, Ti-rich Ni-Ti thin films showed a good shape memory behavior because of a unique fine microstructure not present in bulk specimens. Addition of Cu or Pd to a Ti-50at.%Ni thin film was also found to improve the shape memory behavior. The potential of shape memory thin films as material for microactuators is discussed.

An investigation of thin-film coating/substrate systems by nanoindentation

Article Abstract:

An experiment was conducted to determine the indentation load-displacement behavior and failure mechanism of the substrate materials including silicons, polycarbonates, and diamond-like carbon coating materials. The Berkovich indenter was utilized to examine load displacement behavior of bulk, soft coating on hard-substrate and hard-coating on soft-substrate material systems which represent the substrate materials. Results showed that failure mechanisms of coating and substrate systems can be explained by the elastic stress field.

A method for damage evaluation of laminated composite materials by using model updating techniques in dynamics

Article Abstract:

A technique for identifying damages in laminated composite materials using model updating methods in dynamics is developed. In this method, a single test is performed for evaluating the stiffness attributes of bending, extension, twisting and transverse shear effects while the stiffness of laminated composite tubes were checked using the sensitivity method. Numerical simulation tests confirm the applicability of the proposed method.
