Effect of bacterial cell shape on transport of bacteria in porous media

Article Abstract:

Different types of bacteria were eluted in pulses through quartz sand-packed columns to find out if cell shape affects the transport of bacteria in porous media. It is shown that the ratio of cell width to cell length influences the transport of bacteria. Short rods with low water contact angles exhibited the greatest decline in length during passage through the columns.

Rate-limited transport of hydroxyatrazine in an unsaturated soil

Article Abstract:

Hydroxyatrazine chemical sorption and desorption experiments in unsaturated soil suggest that water and contaminants can be transported through a wide range of moisture conditions. Experiments used -8 cm and -19 cm soil pressure heads with resulting water breakthrough curves showing similarities. Hydroxyatrazine transport however, was slightly enhanced at the -8 cm head at 84% compared with the 79% of the -19 cm head.
