Modeling aerosol formation from alpha-pinene + NO(subx) in the presence of natural sunlight using gas-phase kinetics and gas-particle partitioning theory

Article Abstract:

A gas-particle kinetics model of alpha-pinene reactions in the present of sunlight, NO(subx) (nitrogen oxide), and ozone and aerosol formation was compared to outdoor smog chamber experiments conducted under natural sunlight in the presence of NO(subx) and in the dark in the presence of O(sub3) in order to present a new predictive kinetic model for aerosol formation. The results are tabulated and graphed.

Widespread cheating triggers Clean Air Act enforcement initiative

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will enforce the Clean Air Act with noncompliance rates reaching as high as 80% for seven industry sectors emitting nitrogen oxide (NOx). The industries involved are petroleum, electric utilities, animal feeding operations, industrial organic compound, chemical preparation, iron and steel, and primary nonferrous metal facilities.
