Mountains of data

Article Abstract:

A new way of data management has been developed wherein research information is graphically represented on a computerized 'landscape.' The system utilizes mapping algorithms that group together scientific papers based on the number of citations that they share. The system can help engineers, researchers and managers in tracking research and development trends in different fields of science and technology. These trends appear as peaks, valleys and trails that are continually changing. The system was originally designed for keeping track of the stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

Building on research

Article Abstract:

The ThrustSSC supersonic car has been the subject of extensive research work. This work will continue during attempts to break the world land speed record. Researchers have tackled issues which have never previously been addressed, and believe that they have developed approaches that could prove very useful in the future. Areas of research have included the effect of jet efflux on the car, ways of preventing the car from taking off and the behaviour of the car's rear panels.
