NMR structure determination of protein-ligand complexes by lanthanide labeling

Article Abstract:

The paramagnetism of lanthanide ions enables the quick determination of the three-dimensional (3D) structures of protein-ligand complexes by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The manner in which detailed structural information can be derived from NMR data, and how lanthanide ions can be site-specifically attached to otherwise diamagnetic proteins, are described.

Functionalized sol-gel coatings for optical applications

Article Abstract:

Some new applications of functionalized sol-gel coatings in optics are reviewed. These include luminescent and transparent films for light emissions, mesoporous silica films as low-index layers in interferential antireflective devices and thirdly mesoporous silica films as binders of Ti[O.sub.2] nanoparticles in photocatalytic devices.

"Four-dimensional" protein structures: Examples from metalloproteins

Article Abstract:

Nuclear magnetic resonance technique is used to define the fourth dimension of the protein structure, where proteins are not rigid objects, but sample wide ranges of different conformations. A discussion on examples of conformational heterogeneity taken from the realm of metalloproteins and their functional implications is presented.
