'Playing chicken' over gene markers

Organizers of the Human Genome Project hope to collect thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to produce a catalog of human genetic variations before the SNPs are patented by private companies. Donor consent and confidentiality are major challenges.

The mouse that prompted a roar

Article Abstract:

Many researchers oppose the practice of restricting the use of mice that have been genetically engineered using a patented technology. The controversy generated by restrictions placed on the use of mice created by Du Pont's CreloxP technology is discussed.
