New chemicals seeks to outwit insect pests

Article Abstract:

Chemical companies are introducing new insecticides that are designed to be environmentally friendly and to combat pesticide resistance. The new products, which include imidacloprid, fipronil and pyrroles, are less harmful to non-target species than older insecticides.

Going back to the future with small synthetic compounds

Synthetic chemical compounds that mimic the actions of human proteins are a major field of biotechnology research. The goal of such research is to produce substances that have the same medicinal effect as the proteins they replace, but produce fewer side effects.

Exploring transgenic plants as a new vaccine source

Article Abstract:

Recent research offers hope for cheaper, safer vaccines produced from genetically engineered plants and plant viruses. A team of plant scientists at Texas A&M univ are developing vaccines that can be taken orally by eating the plant in which they are engineered.
