New uses for old bridges

Article Abstract:

The provisions of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 allow historic preservation which includes restoration of old bridges. The strengthening and widening the old structures are not financially practical since construction of new bridges are more cost effective. However, instead of demolishing these defunct bridges, the provisions dictate that they are to be restored to maintain their historical relevance. Such bridges will be rehabilitated for other uses. Some historic bridges include the Walnut Street Bridge, Stone Arch Bridge and the Keller Memorial Bridge.
