Occurrence of fluorescent whitening agents in sewage and river water determined by solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography

Article Abstract:

An approach for determining fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) in sewage and river water samples is presented. It uses solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography with post-column ultraviolet irradiation and fluorescence detection. The method is appropriate for determining total concentrations of FWA as well as for analyzing the behavior of their individual isomers at the low micrograms per liter level. Some of its applications to sewage and river water analysis are presented.

Modeling the photochemical degradation of ethylenediaminetetraacetate in the River Glatt

Article Abstract:

The results of field investigations and laboratory experiments were combined with computer modeling to examine the degradation of the pollutant, ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), in the River Glatt. Direct photolysis was identified as the most important process that determines the occurrence and behavior of EDTA because of the complex's susceptibility to irradiation.

Dynamic behavior of fluorescent whitening agents in Greifensee: field measurements combined with mathematical modeling of sedimentation and photolysis

Article Abstract:

Photodegradation was found responsible for the removal of 53% and 81% of fluorescent whitening agents diaminostilbene (DAS1) and distyrylbiphenyl (DSBP) in Greifensee Lake in Switzerland, respectively. Sorption and sedimentation both accounted for the elimination of 20% and 8% of the agents, respectively. Flushing, meanwhile, removed 27% of DAS1 and 10% of DSBP.
