Offshore breeze: offshore wind farms are finally becoming a reality

Article Abstract:

The UK's first offshore wind turbine will open in spring 2000, some one kilometer off the east coast harbor of Blyth, Northumbria. But Britain's fledgling windpower industry says it is being restrained by lack of political will to invest in new projects and to ease the planning permission process, despite the promise that 10% of the UK's energy supplies will come from renewable sources by 2010. The world market for offshore wind turbine installations is forecast to be worth some 45 million pounds sterling by 2015.
