Oil and water

Article Abstract:

Developments in offshore engineering are allowing oil companies to reach previously inaccessible deep water oil reserves. A significant recent development is that of deep water fields using floating production and offloading (FPSO) vessels. Oil company BP is investing 900 million pounds sterling in its Schiehallion oilfield in the North Sea which lies in 400 mt of water. Some 29 subsea wells will be drilled and oil will be stored in the world's largest FPSO, now being constructed at Harland and Wolff's Belfast shipyard. The vessel will have a capacity for 950,000 barrels of oil.

Water world

Article Abstract:

The marine vessel industry is experiencing a surge in new product ideas and innovations. Tankers and chemical carriers are turning into more complex vehicles and innovative ideas are being noticed in the designs of ferries and other niche areas. Examples are the two HSS 1500 aluminium catamaran ferries, Stena Explorer and Stena Voyager from Finnyards of Rauma, Finland. In the area of fast commercial transports, the small water plane area twin hull is increasingly becoming popular.

New designs stack up

Article Abstract:

Forklift truck manufacturers are altering the design and performance capabilities of their products, in response to consumer clamor for better-designed cabs, drives, control systems and diagnostics. A trend towards AC systems, from conventional DC, has also been noted even as new European Union regulations on vehicle noise and emission have effected new design requirements. Safety, ergonomics and energy efficiency, however, have remained the foremost concerns of most buyers.
