On the road to Rio and to sustainability

Article Abstract:

US opposition on economic grounds to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development's goals to protect biodiversity and the global climate and to assist underdeveloped countries is misguided. US competitiveness will increasingly depend on environmentally sound and energy-efficient products and processes. Thirty-four percent of US exports go to developing countries, a market that will deteriorate without sustainable development. The US can lay a foundation for investments as well as international good will by helping spur growth in poor countries.

Poisoned legacy: environmental quality in the newly independent states

Article Abstract:

The health and prosperity of the newly independent states of the former USSR will be largely affected by the errors in the industrial development strategy, energy and public health policies adopted by the past dispensation. Marked damages have been assessed from air, water, soil and other biological resources. A semblance of environmental management has been initiated but organizational shortcomings and the faltering economy stupefy its development. Patience and the additional resources from the west are necessary for this effort.

Environmental assistance to the Newly Independent States

Article Abstract:

Environmental aid is available for the Newly Independent States in the form of technical assistance. The linkage between a country's democratization and progress towards a market economy or some special interest of the donor country with these assistance programs is evident. The US, Canada and Finland are expected to be the initial donor countries as the World Bank is expected to act as the international coordinator for the negotiations.
