Panel recommends "a little bit of bitter medicine." (National Research Council recommends streamlining of National Optical Astronomy Observatories)

Article Abstract:

The National Optical Astronomy Observatories is being urged to close down its small telescopes and concentrate its limited resources on a few areas where it can provide scientific leadership. These recommendations were made by a panel from the National Research Council tasked with streamlining the US astronomy sector.

Biology: there's honor outside Stockholm

Article Abstract:

Physiologist Knut Schmidt-Nielsen won the 1992 International Prize for Biology, an award established by Japan to recognize areas of research not covered by the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. Schmidt-Nielsen has made important discoveries in a diverse range of areas of study.

Probing the cosmos in extreme ultraviolet

Article Abstract:

Astrophysicist Roger Malina reported that NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite has detected the ultraviolet emissions of hundreds of objects since its launch in Jun 1993. Many of the objects have not been identified before.
