Passive air sampling of PCBs: field calculation of atmospheric sampling rates by triolein-containing semipermeable membrane devices

Article Abstract:

The US Geological Survey of Columbia, MO developed a passive air sampling technique to measure persistent organic pollutants as an alternative to inefficient methods which rely on high-volume air samplers. The method uses triolein as a solvent system in a polyethylene tube to act as a semipermeable membrane device. Results from its testing revealed its ability to remove polychlorinated biphenyls from 6.5 cubic meters of air daily under ideal conditions.

Measurement and modleing of the diurnal cycling of atmospheric PCBs and PAHs

Article Abstract:

Rapid, temperature-controlled air-terrestrial surface exchange of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been found to influence air concentrations and proved that scale cycling of PCBs occurs regionally, or even globally. Ongoing recent local or regional source inputs, atmospheric reactions and deposition processes, on the other hand, govern short-term polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons air concentrations.
