Predicting pollution

Article Abstract:

JHK and Assoc has developed a new software that integrates mobile emission forecasts with database management systems to generate the necessary data for a more accurate analysis of air quality. SYSTEMII works on the standard travel model functions of transportation planning organizations but it also classifies emission rates into four main types of emissions. Meanwhile, a link prototype system deals with hourly regional forecasts using normal regional model systems. This improves data accuracy thanthe usual methods of transportation agencies. The California Air resources board has used the system for the emission analysis of San Joaquin Valley, CA.

Integrated approach key to geosynthetics QA/QC

Article Abstract:

Delegates to a two-day seminar on geosynthetic materials proposed that a comprehensive quality control and assurance method be used in manufacturing geosynthetic materials. The seminar, sponsored by the Geosynthetics Research Institute at Drexel University, was attended by suppliers, designers and owners of landfills. Chuck Rivette, a Browning-Ferris Industries geotechnical engineer, observed that the costs of construction quality assurance (CQA) have risen from $3,000 to $49,000 for double composite liner systems. He believes that CQA should be merged in the design process to avoid costly failures.

Environmental engineers strike gold

Article Abstract:

Glamis GoldLtd contracted SEC Donahue Inc to supervise the installation of the geotextile liners at its Picacho Gold Mine in Imperial County, CA. The mine is unique because all the work associated with gold processing is done on-site. The liners prevent the leaching solutions from contaminating the soil and guaranteethat no gold is lost due to leaks. SEC Donahue inspected the liners as it was being put in place and made sure that the double seams were stronger than the liner. It even documented the installation process to assure compliance with environmental regulations and site requirements.
