Probing the Port of Los Angeles

Article Abstract:

Officials required geotechnical studies to be conducted prior to the preliminary design phase of the Port of Los Angeles 2020Plan. The plan involves the development of new land using landfills for the construction of new container and general cargo terminals. The geotechnical studies included an extensive marine exploration program, lab tests to define stratigraphic units and the development of a computerized database and subsurface soil model. The latter can serve as a basis for predesign analysis and provide graphical illustrations of geophysical site conditions.

Geotech design reports get a litmus test

Article Abstract:

The underground design and construction professionals feel that the guidelines in the geotechnical design reports need to be changed to avoid changed-condition claims by some contractors. Geotechnical data reports are only for reference and are not a part of the contract documents. It provides a detailed picture of geologic conditions and their expected behavior during tunneling to the designer and the specifier. However, owners feel that the geotechnical report should explain the geology to the contractor and form a basis for construction details.

Getting along: the geotech and the CM

Article Abstract:

Most geotechnical engineers working on sites are ignored and not respected by construction managers (CM). A basic understanding of the other party is essential to cure this. CM's are always bound by a budget and schedule, and their different field of experience may cause arguments between geotechnical engineers and them. Sometimes the CM may ignore even valid suggestions made by the geotechnical specialist, but the geotechnical specialist is required to be diplomatic to make working conditions comfortable.
