Article Abstract:

Cheryl Osimo became very active in pushing for a study of the environmental causes of breast cancer in Cape Cod after she was diagnosed of having the disease and after discovering that Cape Cod had a higher incidence of breast cancer. As a result of her efforts, the Cape Cod Breast Cancer and Environmental study was launched in 1994 by the Silent Spring Institute. The first phase of the study, which was completed in 1997, failed to establish a link between pesticide contaminants in groundwater to breast cancer risk.

Challenging risk assessment: traditional toxicological testing cannot detect the adverse effects of very low doses of environmental chemicals

Article Abstract:

Conventional techniques for determining the detrimental effects of environmental chemicals are not accurate indicating the toxic effects. This is because very small quantities of manufactured chemicals can cause endocrine disruption. Previous methods have been premised on the assumption that high-dose testing can indicate results at low-doses. However, very low doses have been observed to have significant adverse effects. In fact, there is no threshold dose below which the said chemicals can be considered safe.
