Putting polystyrene to work

Article Abstract:

US civil engineers are increasingly using geofoam for filling applications. Geofoam is the term which refers to all plastic foam solids with a low-density cellular construction which can be used in technical applications including road, bridge and building construction. Geofoam presents some challenges due to properties including combustibility, solubility in organic fluids and ease of puncturing, but it is a strong, lightweight material with good insulating properties. Its advantages over traditional fills include greater building speeds and less settlement.

Putting down roots

Article Abstract:

Phytocovers are engineered agronomic systems designed to control the percolation of contaminants to groundwater through the natural evapotranspiration process. Phytocovers utilize trees, crops and shrubs to lock waste into landfills and establish barriers that are safer and less costly. Several factors influencing the design of a phytocover system. These include hydrologic water balance computations, soil type, slope characteristics and gas emission.
