Putting the UK back on top

Article Abstract:

Mark Radcliffe, deputy director of the Confederation of British Industry and head of the British National Manufacturing Council, plans to bring the UK industries to the forefront of the world market. Radcliffe feels that the British economy cannot be improved without any improvement in the industry. For this to be achieved, the productivity of the British industries should increase at least by 30% by the year 2000. The importance of government investment in industries will also contribute to the increase in productivity.

Green light ahead

Article Abstract:

Increasing environmental consciousness and tough new anti-pollution strictures have helped increase job opportunities for environmental engineers even during severe recessionary trends. Master-level courses are increasing, and help create more environmental experts, because environmental engineers need formalized instruction in skills they have not learned earlier. The field offers attractive career opportunities and provides greater motivation than jobs which are not environment-friendly.

The eternal student

Article Abstract:

Changing technology and an uncertain marketplace are encouraging engineers to refresh and improve their skills. Many companies support this, either by financial individual study or establishing company training programs. Open learning courses, which replace teachers with videotape or a computer program, are gaining popularity among full-time employees who cannot take time off or travel for classes. Many programs are designed by industry professionals as well as by academics.
