Real-time characterization of the organic composition and size of individual diesel engine smoke particles

Article Abstract:

An ion trap mass spectrometer can be reliably used to monitor diesel engine emissions in real time. An experiment, conducted for the express purpose of applying the aerosol ion trap method to the analysis of diesel engine exhaust fumes, revealed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) hydrogenation is dependent on mass and that hydrogenated PAHs (HPAHs) might mainly be from the diesel fuel itself. The ion trap mass spectrometer needs only be coupled directly to the source of the exhaust for it to be able to give on-line readings.

Dissipation and distribution of herbicides in a Fluventic Hapludoll soil

Article Abstract:

Dissipation and distribution of herbicides in a Fluventic Hapludoll soil was looked into over a five-year period. Developed were 15 dissipation curved for atrazine (2-chloro-4(ethylamino)-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine) and 25 dissipation curves for alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N(methoxymethyl)acetamide). According to the study, only two of the 39 sampling events showed a statistically significant difference in alachlor dissipation over the five-year period.
