Reinforced building panel resists structural damage

Article Abstract:

Habib Dagher, the director of the US's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center, and William Davids, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, have created a reinforced building panel that can increase the strength of a typical house's walls by as much as 20 percent. This technique will help to reduce the damage occurring by earthquakes and hurricanes.

Synthetic material absorbs mercury in wastewater

Article Abstract:

Highly porous silica is developed by the researchers at the Pacific North-west National Laboratory which, when treated with thiol, has the ability to capture mercury ions in wastewater. The features of thiol attract mercury ions and ignore other ions in the wastewater.
