Remaining steadfast when California quakes

Article Abstract:

California has devised a series of strategies such as upgradation of seismic codes, construction of buildings according to seismic design stipulations and improving its emergency-response systems to reduce the impact of earthquakes. California has effectively handled disaster relief as it has established a hierarchical and sequential response system that gives more power to the municipalities. Measures such as the construction of a satellite-based communication system, improvement in rescue operations and development of a uniform emergency management system help the government to coordinate relief work.

Innovative management of California wetlands

Article Abstract:

Adaptive management and restoration techniques are required to manage California wetlands as the offer a mechanism for modifying techniques and original plans as projects evolve. Adaptive techniques involve plotting a management strategy before knowing, with certainty, whether these will give the desired results. Thus it leaves room for innovation and better response to unanticipated problems. Adaptive management techniques are now being used in coastal restoration projects in the San Diego, California, area. Work has started in San Dieguito Lagoon, Famosa Slough and Sweetwater Marsh.

California seeks respite from flood of immigrants

Article Abstract:

The problem of illegal immigrants in California is basically a creation of federal policies. According to the Census Bureau, California has about 2 million illegal immigrants, half the national total. The state's Department of Finance estimated an additional 5.5 million legal foreign-born residents. Much of the problem of illegal immigration is a result of Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which legalized most illegal residents.
