SAE update

Article Abstract:

The Feb. 1996 congress of the Society of Automotive Engineers featured innovative products and ideas related to automobile design and engineering. Three point seat belts with the Integrated Structural Seat System by Johnson Control allow better seat belt fit. The passive underbody main adsorber system is an emissions control device by Corning Inc. The IC 5425 engine control unit from Cosworth Intelligent Controls is used in engine dynamometer and test stand applications. An automatic-dimming rearview mirror by Gentex Corp. and turbochargers by Allied Signal Automotive are discussed.

Article Abstract:

Several new products were showcased during the Feb 1997 Society of Automotive Engineers conference in Detroit, MI. Among these are GKN Automotive's second generation propeller shafts which feature a 50% weight reduction, Perkins Technology's 3.0 liter, 170 bhp V6 direct injection diesel engine for automobiles, minivans and sport utility vehicles, and the prototype Lotus Elise vehicle powered by two Zytek electric motors.

Article Abstract:

An innovative three-dimensional automotive body part material has been designed comprising foam sandwiched between aluminium. Automotive body part manufacturers will find the material strong, light and cost-effective to use, according to design company Technical Development representative Dr Wolfgang Thurow. Aluminium foam parts weight up to 50% less than conventional technologies.
