Scoping out scour

Article Abstract:

New non-destructive methods for detecting bridge scour, the primary cause of bridge failure and closure in the US, are presented. The two major systems categories consist of postflood measurement systems and real-time systems. Postflood measurment systems assess geophysical conditions after floods and areuseful in determining the amount of material redeposited in a scour hole after a flood. Methods include subsurface interface radar systems and continuous seismic profiling. Meanwhile, real-time systems observe the streambed during floods. Methods include permanently-installed systems and fixed systems.

In defense of bridge engineers

Article Abstract:

Martin P. Burke states that structural engineers conduct detailed study of problems concerning bridge construction. They are competent to locate and amend any constructional defects. It is not entirely correct to blame engineers for mishaps that occur. Sometimes the defects are such that they cannot be located even after close inspection. At times, inspection is done by people who are not professionally qualified for the job.

Lessons from the Kinzua

Article Abstract:

The details concerning the causes of the collapse of Kinzua Viaduct, a century old railroad bridge in Pennsylvania, which serves as a remainder and example for structures, which are susceptible to similar kind of damage, are presented.
