Seattle swings again

Article Abstract:

The 1992 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award was given to the West Seattle Low-level Swing Bridge, the only existing hydraulic-powered double-leaf concrete swing bridge. Its design and construction posed challenges to the engineers and contractors who had to consider load and seismic factors, traffic management, continuous telephone and water service during line relocation and protection of migrating fish. Designers found the usual design impractical and their creativity produced an efficient hydraulic swing bridge that is safe, earthquake-resistant, sturdy, and maintainable.
