Seeking alternatives to whole-animal tests

Article Abstract:

In vitro procedure that conducts animal experiments at microscopic level is emerging as an alternative to in vivo procedure that uses the whole animal. In vitro studies offer more scope for controlled studies, they are very economical, and use lesser number of animals than whole animal tests. However, lack of sound validation methods to assess these studies raises concern over human welfare, and that animal welfare should be balanced against human safety. Proper scientific principles should be followed to ensure that these studies protect the animal welfare while ensuring human safety.

Rights, reason drive research

Article Abstract:

Scientists are concerned about animal welfare, and medical research experiments on animals are performed as humanely as possible. Medical progress which eradicated a number of acute diseases is the result of research performed on animals. The Dept of Agriculture inspectors are authorized to conduct periodic inspections of research laboratories, and review research records and protocols. Animal care committees are authorized to approve scientists' proposals to use animal experimentation.

The three Rs and biomedical research

Article Abstract:

New legislation emphasizes the scientific, rather than ethical, reasons to limit animal experimentation. The guidelines are: reduction of number of animals used, refinement of experiments to minimize pain and distress, and replacement of animals with more primitive animals or animal parts.
