Tracing the Sources of PCDD/Fs and PCBs to Lake Baikal

Article Abstract:

The freshwater Lake Baikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a unique ecosystem threatened by PCB and PCDD/F contamination. Analysis of fish and soil samples show the chemicals are low in the pristine northeast area and high in the southwest industrialized area, which includes a chloralkali chemical complex.

Soil/air partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds. 2. Influence of temperature and relative humidity

Researchers from the University of Bayreuth, Germany investigated the effect of temperature and relative humidity on the partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls and chlorobenzene between a layer of sandy loam soil and air.

Lack of an aging effect on the soil-air partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls

Article Abstract:

Soil aging has been found to be an insignificant factor in determining soil-air partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Experiments employed a solid-phase fugacity meter to determine soil-air partitioning in two soil samples aged 392 days and about 30 years respectively. Storage whether by glass jars or by natural processes have been shown to have a short term effect on soil-air partitioning and none thereafter.
