Article Abstract:

The role played by musical instruments, and the guitar in particular in defining the concepts of 'noise' and 'musical sound,' is examined. The development of the guitar's changing technology in the 20th century, through the move from acoustic to electric instruments up to its interaction with digital technologies, which marks its 'cultural identity', is outlined.
