States fail to set Great Lakes water quality implementation plans

Article Abstract:

The eight states bordering the Great Lakes have failed to finalize their plans to carry out the provisions of the Great Lakes Initiative (GLI). The GLI, which will provide strict water quality standards across the Great Lakes basin, was supposed to be implemented on March 23, 1997. Only three states namely Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana had approved the GLI, prompting an environmental group, the National Wildlife Federation, to sue the Environmental Protection Agency. The group is seeking for the immediate implementaton of the landmark initiative.

EPA issues new guidance to improve states' water quality reports

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency has revised the state reporting guidelines contained in section 305(b) of the Clean Water Act. The states are now required to shift to a five-year reporting cycle employing probabilistic sampling to improve data quality and collection. Previous census sampling methods that required states to sample all bodies of water resulted in delays and incomplete data. State environmental officials are asking for more technical and financial support to improve their monitoring and reporting.
