(Superscript206)Ph/(superscript207)Pb ratios in tree rings as monitors of environmental change

Article Abstract:

Two English locations produced data that shows sycamore trees accurately record lead levels. Annular growth rings show variations in lead levels that do not correlate to changes in use of vehicular leaded gasoline. Specifically, lead levels of trees in industrial and non-industrial areas both showed deposition rates inconsistent with decreased use of leaded gas. Additional tests showed that deposition of lead within the soil was not a substantial source of lead uptake by the trees. Researchers concluded that air-borne lead pollution from smelting plants was the main source of air-borne lead pollution. Researchers further postulated that uptake of air-borne lead into the trees xylem explained deposition rates.

Application of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in dendrochemical analysis

Article Abstract:

Laser ablation sampling (LAS) in conjunction with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to analyze the trace element composition of a sycamore tree's xylem. The use of the LAS technique, which allows high-resolution analysis with low detection limits, with the ICP-MS, provides a potential for rapid analysis that has reduced contamination-risks because of the minimal sample preparation required.

Development of solid calibration standards for trace elemental analyses of tree rings by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

Article Abstract:

Laser ablation sampling together with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry was utilized to assess red maple tree rings. Utilization of laser ablation sampling takes into account the use of C as an internal standard to correct mild differences in ablation. Calibration standards was also utilized to transform integrated signal intensities into concentrations.
