Transformation and detoxification of halogenated fumigants by ammonium thiosulfate

The U.S. Salinity Laboratory performed dehalogenation experiments on halogenated fumigants using ammonium thoisulfate as a means of decreasing the environmental and health risks involved in fumigation.

Methyl bromide emissions from agricultural fields: bare-soil, deep injection

Article Abstract:

Deep injection application in cool ambient air temperatures and moist soil conditions were found to delay methyl bromide emissions in tests carried out to find the best method of methyl bromide application in agricultural fields. Methyl bromide is used as a nematocide, fungicide and herbicide in the agricultural sector but is being suspected for its potential in destroying the ozone layer. Deep injection of the fumigant and supplementing the injection with an effective soil cover would reduce methyl bromide's transport to the atmosphere.

Surface amendment of fertilizer ammonium thiosulfate to reduce methyl bromide emission from soil

Article Abstract:

Methyl bromide (CH3Br) was rapidly degraded to Br- in fertilizer ammonium thiosulfate (ATS)-amended soil. The research showed that degradation rate was dependent on the ATS:Ch3Br molar ratio and soil temperature. Greatly reduced CH3Br emission was noticed from soil columns when Thio-Sul, a 60% ATS fertilizer, was applied to the soil surface at 660 kg ha-1. The emission of CH3Br from the unamended column was 61% of the applied dosage following a 30-cm injection, compared with <10% from the ATS-treated columns.
