System to measure relative rate constants of semivolatile organic compounds with hydroxyl radicals

Article Abstract:

A method to determine reaction rate constants for hydroxyl (OH) radical-semivolatile organic compounds under tropospheric conditions is introduced. The system integrates on-line mass spectrometric detection to improve experimental time resolution and to reduce sampling volume. It also includes temperature control to allow the examination of the temperature dependence of OH-organic reactions. OH is generated by ozone photolysis and subsequent reaction with water in a quartz reactor.

Diffusion denuder for the collection of semivolatile organic compounds

Article Abstract:

A diffusion denuder is an effective collector of semivolatile organic compounds. In a diffusion denuder, an atmospheric sample is passed through a tube or set of tubes that are coated with material. The coating allows for the selection of desired compounds and allows unwanted particles to pass through the system uncollected. This collection is more effective because the vapor-phase components are not passed over particles, as is the case with filter/sorbent samplers.

Computer-controlled low-volume air sampler for the measurement of semivolatile organic compounds

Article Abstract:

A new automated, low-volume air sampler for semivolatile organic compound analysis is demonstrated. The sampler uses small polyurethane foam plugs as sampling media and it features a 20-plug-capacity sampling carousel. After it is fully loaded with plugs, the computer carries out the sampling program with no necessity for human intervention. A demonstration of how the sampler functions is presented.
