Technology and a sustainable future

Article Abstract:

Applied technology has had many negative effects on the environment, and there is now an urgent need to develop new types of technologies based on reducing environmental damage. According to research by the National Commission on the Environment, such technologies would have to above all look at preventing pollution, but must also address the issue of energy consumption and production. Political and economic problems have so far prevented the widespread use of existing technologies which can help in areas such as reducing the use of toxic materials, and extensive cooperation in politics and society will be required if these barriers are to be overcome.

Rethinking technology in the future

Article Abstract:

There is now a global call for sustainable development, a new economic philosophy that acknowledges the need to preserve or renew ecosystems so they can in turn sustain economic systems and life. Traditional technologies have begun to defeat themselves economically because they exploit resources rather than sustain them, and they must be discarded. Jobs may be lost, so industry and labor will probably protest, particularly in the US. But a long-term program of 'enlightened economics' that develops technologies respectful of the requirements of ecosystems is the only agenda that will ensure our survival.

Defining sustainable development

Article Abstract:

The concept of sustainable economic development may have won worldwide support, but determining how to achieve it has proven to be quite a difficult task. A distinction must be drawn between economic growth and economic development since growth is, by its very nature, finite. The global economy must not be allowed to develop in ways that will merely increase its size or dollar value; rather it must be developed so as to improve the overall quality of life.
