Tectonics in a sandbox: Researchers model the earth's motions at small scale

Article Abstract:

Researchers Christopher Paola, Gary Parker and James P. Mullin have designed an innovative geologic modeling tank which will enable the study of siltation. Crustal movements are modeled using a rubber mat suspended over fine gravel placed over a honeycomb of funnels. Crustal movements are effected by withdrawing sand from the funnels to create the desired contour.

High tension: researchers debate EMF experiments on cells

Article Abstract:

A team of Oregon State and Caltech researchers, led by Atsuko Kobayashi, has advanced a theory that trace levels of biogenic magnetite and ferromagnetic particulate contamination in laboratories affect EMF research on cells. The Kobayashi team's research remains controversial, however.

The doctor glut: experts debate predictions of a physician surplus

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that there may be a surplus of more than 165,000 physicians by 2000. Some studies suggest that doctors' salaries are falling, but others show that salaries are just plateauing. The increase in female physicians, who tend to work fewer hours, may reduce the surplus.
