The Male's Dilemma

Article Abstract:

Researchers used domestic chickens to study the relationship between immune responsiveness and the size of the combs on their heads. Results indicate an inverse relationship between immunocompetence and the size of the sexual ornament. This may be caused by energy competition between the immune system and the maintenance of the comb.

Asthma: an epidemic in the absence of infection?

Article Abstract:

New research suggest that the current increase in asthma cases may be related to the reduction of childhood respiratory diseases, rather than the presence of specific allergens. Taro Shirakawa et al correlated an asthma epidemic with the near-eradication of tuberculosis in Japanese children.
