The bad boy of robotics

Article Abstract:

Roboticist Rodney Brooks first attracted the attention of the scientific community when he argued, and proved, that robots do not need the ability to reason to be able to accomplish useful tasks. Today, Brooks is building a robot which could be the world's first conscious android.

Kraft TeleRobotics Inc has developed a materials handler and excavator that is remote controlled, allowing the operator to keep a safe distance from the work site. The operator views the work through the use of three video screens, and the operation itself is simple to learn.

Earth Observing System: eyes on the earth

Article Abstract:

The first weather satellite was launched in 1960, and now a new generation of satellite sensors are being planned for 1998. The 'Earth Observing System' will keep track of environmental changes on an all-inclusive basis, rather than the current piecemeal basis.
