The effects of experimental reservoir creation on the bioaccumulation of methylmercury and reproductive success of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor)

Article Abstract:

The rates of methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in tree swallows breeding near man-made experimental reservoir nearly doubled after flooding. However, the mean MeHg burdens in the insectivorous, nestling songbird did not produce overt toxicological affects and did not affect reproductive success.

Bioenergetics-based model for accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls by nestling tree swallows, Tachycineta bicolor

Article Abstract:

A new bioenergetics-based model is used to simulate the accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls by nestling tree swallows. The predictions generated by the model were in good agreement with actual field measurements of polychlorinated biphenyl levels in relatively uncontaminated sites. However, model predictions for contamination levels in areas with known sediment contamination were consistently overestimated.
