The greening of industrial parks

Article Abstract:

Corporations, government agencies and environmental groups are collaborating to develop an environment-friendly industrial park wherein companies minimize pollution and reduce costs by using each other's material energy and water byproducts. The concept is based on a similar effort in Kalundorg, Denmark, where a power plant's waste heat is used for energy. Eco-industrial parks in operation include the Fairfield Ecological Industrial Park in Fairfield, MD, the Port of Cape Charles Sustainable Technologies Industrial Park, VA, and Brownsville-Matamoros Eco-Industrial Park, TX.

It's a fly! It's a bug! It's a microplane!

Article Abstract:

A two-ounce, less-than-six-inch micro spy plane is being developed at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory to be used initially for surveillance by small military units. Researchers are currently resolving the problem of fitting all the necessary components into the small package. The prototype, which will be functional within three years, is expected to reach speeds of up to 30 mph with an operational radius of three miles and a flying time of one hour. Future plans include the production of chip-size planes with the ability to detect chemical signatures of unconventional weapons.

Detecting "rail cancer." (high-speed railroad maintenance device)

Article Abstract:

A team of civil and environmental engineering researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a high-speed railroad maintenance device that affords early detection of steel rail defects. The new technology utilizes the principle of Doppler effect which relies on the change in the frequency of sound waves produced by the difference in the distances of two approximating objects. This method is projected to be more cost-effective and efficient than the present method of track maintenance and inspection.
