The politics of the environment

Article Abstract:

The weak US economy has raised concerns about the potentially adverse effect of environmental legislation. Critics maintain that compliance costs will cause inflation and reduce US competitiveness. These allegations are exaggerated considering that other countries are in the process of adopting similar legislation. Also, US companies stand to gain from a burgeoning environmental export market. However, criticisms of environmental policy will be justified if government funds are not allocated in proportion to environmental risk.

Ossification at EPA

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will experience little effect from the 90-day moratorium on regulations implemented by Pres Bush. The EPA regulatory process traditionally has been long and convoluted, and a 90-day delay will not have much impact. The delays in the regulatory process are cause by such factors as the increasing use of public participation and disputes within the executive branch. The slow pace of regulation has become accepted, but the EPA must become more goal-oriented.

Books as bellwethers: the Gore manifesto

Article Abstract:

A most comprehensive and philosophical paper has been drafted by the US vice president in the form of a best-selling book. Entitled 'Earth in the Balance', this publication discusses the relationship of people to their physical environment as it chronicles environmental abuses. The environmental Marshall plan being advocated in the book presents the necessity of central planning for the preservation of the environment as it also directs the leanings of the new administration.
