The rediscovery of public health microbiology

Article Abstract:

The reemergence of microbial diseases warrants a renewed emphasis on microbiological research. Federal research programs should explore the link between infectious diseases and stressed environments, particularly microbes in drinking water. The threats of microbiologically mediated diseases have escalated owing to increased travel worldwide and the consequent rapid spread of diseases, the false belief that antibiotics have virtually eliminated some diseases and lack of research efforts on the reemergence of infectious illnesses with environmental connections.

Pork

Article Abstract:

The area of scientific research and development is being threatened by the pork barrel politics of certain special interests in Congress. Further cuts are being eyed at the already limited National Science Foundation budget. As a result, merit is defined in terms of political expediencies as Congress is percieved to be unable to appreciate some basic principles of research funding.
