The role of gas dissolution and induced crystallization during microcellular polymer processing: a study of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and carbon dioxide systems

Article Abstract:

An experimental study of the formation of a polymer/gas thermoplastic solution using carbon dioxide and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymer reveals that high levels of CO2 solutions induce PET crystallization resulting in a solution that has good microcellular morphology and is resistive to microcellular processing. Crystallinity affects the cell growth and nucleation processes leading to small cell sizes and high cell densities, respectively, to strongly influence microcellular processing. Crystallization also requires a critical gas concentration and induces low solubility and diffusivity and a high matrix stiffness in the solution.

Residual stress measurement in 304 stainless steel weld overlay pipes

Article Abstract:

A cutting and sectioning method measures the full destructive residual stress distribution in 304 stainless steel weld overlay pipes. Compressive axial and hoop residual stresses exist at the inner surface of the weld overlay pipe. Most of the compressive hoop residual stress occurs at the pipe's inner surface. The compressive stress is present throughout the cross section of the pipe. The weld overlay repair enhances the compressive residual stress, promoting thermal-mechanical induced crack closure. This induced crack closure inhibits the intergranular stress corrosion cracking in the pipe.

Impact strength of high-density solid-state microcellular polycarbonate foams

Article Abstract:

The effects of density, cell size and residual gas content on the impact strength of solid-state microcellular polycarbonate (PC) foam were ascertained. Micro cellular polycarbonate foams were produced with a controlled range of cell sizes and densities and was measured at different densities, cell sizes and gas desorption times.
