The smallest stowaways

Article Abstract:

Greg Ruiz and researchers at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center are examining ballast water samples carried by ocean-plying vessels for microorganisms that could potentially spread harmful diseases. Cholera bacteria found in all screened tanks and asexual reproduction of microorganisms suggest that colonization, gene transfer, and new strains of microorganisms could successfully invade an environmental system.
