Thermoplastics as engineering materials: the mechanics, materials, design, processing link

Article Abstract:

Innovations in material characterization, design, fabrication, and assembly of thermoplastic composites create new avenues for research in mechanical engineering. A study analyzes the large deformation behavior of ductile resins, welding of thermoplastics, dimensional stability of injection-molded parts, fiber orientation and the modeling of thickness distributions. The implications for engineers and the need for proper understanding of the impact of processing on the performance of the plastic parts is discussed.

Machinability of fiber-reinforced thermoplastics drilling

Article Abstract:

The machinability of laminated fiber-reinforced plys used in drilling is evaluated.Experiments are conducted wherein carbon fiber-reinforced Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene chips are subjected to a a wide range of cutting conditions using a standard two-flute straight-shank drill with a diameter of five millimeters. Results reveal that the chips have improved machinability owing tothe large amount of plastic deformation in the structures' formation.

An information system for damage tolerance of polymer matrix composites

Article Abstract:

This article describes development of an information system tool for analysis of damage tolerance behavior of polymer matrix composites. Case examples are discussed to demonstrate usefulness of the software in both data retrieval and similarity studies.
