Trace organic compounds in landfill gas at seven U.K. waste disposal sites

Article Abstract:

A survey of trace volatile organic compounds was conducted on seven UK landfill sites. Of the over 140 compounds identified, alkanes, aromatic compounds, cycloalkanes, terpenes, alcohols and ketones and halogenated compounds were found in the seven landfill sites. The relative difference of the proportions of the volatile organic gases in each of the landfills was attributed to the sites' waste composition and the stage of decomposition in each site. A disturbing aspect of the study was the presence of chlorinated compounds that could have an impact on the electric generation from landfill gas.

Aqueous- and solid-phase biogeochemistry of a calcareous aquifer system downgradient from a municipal solid waste landfill (Winterthur, Switzerland)

Article Abstract:

Aerobic respiration, denitrification/NO3-reduction and Fe(III), Mn(III/IV), and SO4 reduction processes were found to occur under the municipal solid waste landfill in Winterthur, Switzerland. The limited availability and release of organic matter have also limited the reduction processes downgradient from the landfill to aerobic respiration, denitrification and Mn(III/IV) reduction. Dilution, however, govern the concentrations of the dissolved organic and inorganic carbon in the solid waste landfill.

Characterization of landfill gas composition at the Fresh Kills municipal solid-waste landfill

Article Abstract:

A characterization of the landfill gas generated at the Fresh Kills municipal solid-waste landfill at New York showed the landfill to produce an average total nonmethane organic compound (NMOC) value of 438 ppmv (as hexane) and over 70 volatile organic compounds. Study also showed that the composition of gas is consistent with respect to the gas exiting the passive vents and the landfill's soil cover.
