Trench captures highway runoff metals

Article Abstract:

A system that filters heavy metals out of the stormwater running of interstate highways has been developed by researchers from the University of Cincinnati. In a year-long demonstration effort, the partial exfiltration trench technology has exhibited its ability to reduce the risk of polluting adjacent soil and water supplies, and registered overall removal efficiencies ranging from 82% to 97%. Among the serious faults of traditional methods for highway-runoff detoxification is that their effectiveness is limited in treating the particulate-bound fraction of pollutants, according to John Sansalone, lead researcher for the project.

Genetically modified crops under fire in EU and U.S

Article Abstract:

In response to consumer concerns, actions are being taken in the United Kingdom and the United States to stop the use of ingredients from genetically altered plants. In the UK a coalition of food retailers led by Sainsbury have agreed to eleiminate such ingredients from their products. In the U.S. environmental groups have filed suit against the Food and Drug Administration opposing the the agency's approval of genetically altered plants that contain the insecticide, Bacillus thringiensis (Bt). The Biotechnology Industry Organization, however, stands by its genetically altered products.
