Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the New Jersey coastal atmosphere

Researchers from Rutgers University measured the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as phenanthrene and benzopyrene in the atmosphere of the New Jersey coast.

Is dillution the solution to pollution?

Article Abstract:

In September 1999, the floodwaters that deluged North Carolina after Hurricane Floyd caused no increase in chemical contamination to sediments and surface waters, researchers from North Carolina State University say. Chemicals had been diluted enough to fall below thresholds necessary for the protection of aquatic life from the volume of water, which was 50-100 times normal flow conditions, that was dumped by the hurricane. Nutrient loading was up however and monitoring of the Pamlico Sound showed that it received almost a year's worth of loading during the six-week period of hurricanes Dennis, Floyd and Irene.
