Tying back a landslide

Article Abstract:

The processes applied by engineers of a hydroelectric project in stabilizing the remains of an ancient landslide are discussed. Slope movements from the said area has indicated the possibility of future movements. This halted the construction of the plant's power tunnel and powerhouse for three months. This expensive delay ended when engineers anchored the heterogenous mix of rock, boulders and landslide debris materials using fabricated tiebacks.

Super structure

Article Abstract:

This article discusses structural engineering innovations that shape the tallest building in Latin America. Mexico City's new Torre Mayor tower is 255 meter high with 57 stories with a steel moment frame structure and situated on a land which is seismically very active. Research shows that a combination of structural systems consisting of seismic and non-seismic dampers enables the tower to respond adequately to a seismic event.
