U.K. universities: jostling for rank

Article Abstract:

The Higher Education Funding Council of England's quadrennial ratings of UK universities' faculty for the purpose of allocating research grants revealed jostling for position among top institutions. The ratings influence schools to concentrate on hiring faculty with strong publication records.

Newspaper backs down over allegations of impropriety

Article Abstract:

Dagens Nyheter alleged that Italian drug firm Fidia had influenced the 1986 selection of Italian neurobiologist Rita Levi-Montalcini for the Nobel Prize in medicine with gifts and prizes given to Nobel Committee members. Pressure from the scientific community forced only a partial retraction.

Funding inequality threatens novel bioscience program

Article Abstract:

The Human Frontier Science Program is an interdisciplinary effort to encourage international collaborations in molecular biology and brain research. The program has won praise, but the high level of Japanese funding in comparison with Western partners could cause Japan to pull out.
