Using levoglucosan as a molecular marker for the long-range transport of biomass combustion aerosols

Article Abstract:

Ambient particulate matter (PM10) collected in Texas during a period of haze resulting from biomass fires in Mexico and Central America were analyzed for the presence of levoglucosan (1,6-anhydro-beta-o-glucopyranose) to track biomass-combustion generated aerosol. The direct emissions related to biomass combustion were shows to account for 26 percent to 41 percent of the PM10 concentrations at locations in Dallas, Texas.

Unraveling the role of aerosols in climate change

Article Abstract:

The effect of aerosols on clouds is estimated and charted worldwide for sources such as anthropogenic organic matter, natural organic matter, anthropogenic black carbon, and dust. The uncertainty of such measures is mathematically modeled and the likely result on climate changes is discussed.

Air quality model evaluation data for organics. 4. C2-C36 non-aromatic hydrocarbons

Article Abstract:

N-alkanes appear to be the most abundant among the 143 non-aromatic hydrocarbons measured in 36 samples collected during a severe photochemical smog occurrence in Los Angeles, CA. The concentrations of individual low moleculer weight alkenes is reduced during transport across the city in the expected order as they react with the hydroxyl radicals. A substantial decrease in the concentration of petroleum biomarkers, which serve as tracers for particulate organics emitted from vehicle exhaust, was observed between 1982 and 1993.
