Viral gene screen

Article Abstract:

US blood banks have implemented nucleic-acid amplification testing (NAT) to screen more accurately HIV and hepatitis C viruses in donated blood. NAT can detect as little as 100 viral particles per milliliter of blood. The HIV virus is detected through NAT 10 days after infection and the hepatitis C virus within 10 to 30 days.
